Description:
The 928 was Porsche’s first touring vehicle: fast, nimble and
comfortable for long distances. During its production run—1977 through
1995—the 928 was mechanically unique to the Porsche line: an aluminum
V-8 engine linked to rear-wheel drive. Yet, this was not just an
Autobahn cruiser, it was a car that could perform in the same league as
its 911 sister with zero to 60 times in the 5-6 second range and a top
speed exceeding 150 m.p.h.
This 1985 model is the 928 S, finished in an ebony exterior and burgundy
leather interior that has only seen 36,455 road miles. For 1985 Porsche
increased the displacement to 4,957 cc producing 284 horsepower in the
aluminum block V-8—almost a 20% increase in power from the earlier “S”
engines. Mated to the highly-desirable 5-speed manual transmission, this
car easily transitions between a high-speed tourer and a track
contender. The V-8 runs smoothly and quietly and the fully synchro
transmission shifts flawlessly up and down through all the gears. The
car grips the road with an almost new set of Dunlop’s top-of-the-line SP
Sport 8000 225/50ZR16 tires.
This 928 is especially impressive with its near perfect gleaming black
exterior finish. Combined with the black spoilers and door-protecting
matching side trim, this car is as elegant as it is powerful. It
features a large hatch and folding rear seats to enable this 2+2 to
accommodate luggage, golf clubs or groceries with equal accessibility.
There is also an electric sunroof for those nice spring and fall days.
The interior is finished in burgundy leather with matching carpets.
There are no holes or tears in the seats and they appear to be in very
good to excellent condition with just a minor amount of wear showing on
the driver’s seat bolster. The car has a black vinyl dash in which all
of the instruments work. There is a minor repair that had been made to
the covering on the console at some point in the past. Both the drivers
and passenger seats are 8-way and electric, although the driver’s
controls are not currently functioning. The Blaupunkt Monterey radio works but the cassette does not.
The car is equipped with climate control, although the A/C does not blow
cold which may simply be that refrigerant needs recharging. This car has
just passed its annual Virginia safety inspection and bears a current
inspection sticker.
This Porsche 928 is a very nice low-mileage example of this touring
marque that has timeless beauty, excellent cosmetics, and outstanding
performance. This is a car that has it all!
