Description:

The Mercedes Benz 240 D diesel is an icon in the classic luxury car marketplace—a full size sedan offering a host of amenities packaged into a sturdy, safe vehicle that was a true economy car before that concept was popularized. Normally these cars only become available with high mileage because their owners are reluctant to give up the safety, reliability and economy these diesels are famous for providing. Our 1983—the last year that Mercedes exported the 240 D to the United States—has traveled only 93,000 miles, and runs and looks like it only recently left the showroom.

Finished in the highly desirable deep burgundy with a contrasting beige interior, this car stand out from its peers as a true classic. The paint is in very good condition, with a depth of shine that tells you it is a quality finish. The chrome is excellent, shining brightly as if new. The interior is clean, without any rips, tears or seam separations. The headliner is very nice, including the area surrounding the sunroof. The trunk is as clean as the car’s interior, a fitting area for transporting your fine luggage, prized golf clubs, or vintage wines! All in all, the cosmetics of this car are outstanding.

Mechanically, the car is equipped with Mercedes’ bullet-proof 4 cylinder diesel engine that is reported to routinely deliver 35+ mpg, when mated to the four speed transmission. The engine starts right up, even in cold weather, and will run at highway speeds all day without a whimper. The 4-speed manual transmission—the transmission of choice in the 240 D—is silky smooth, whether on up shifts or down shifts. Due to the torque of the engine, it easily pulls away from stop lights without the need to rev the engine, thereby making the driving of this car in traffic a delight.

As one would expect from Mercedes, the car has all of the most desired conveniences. The power sunroof operates perfectly and, unlike newer cars, is positioned so the driver and front seat passenger are directly under a large patch of sky, should they wish, without being buffeted by the passing air. The car is air conditioned and the system has been modernized to operate off of the more environmentally friendly coolant, R 134. The four windows are all power and work properly. All of the instruments, including the clock, work properly. The car has cruise control and that is in need of service. The Kenwood AM/FM radio works well, as does the power antenna. Of course, all of the lights and safety equipment work properly, and the car has just passed Virginia’s safety inspection.

The tires are like new and the steering is tight and true, resulting in a comfortable, stable ride at highway speeds. One of the reasons these cars are so desirable is that they are highly maneuverable, with a short turning radius and a power steering system that is effortless while at the same time providing good driver feedback. The brakes, 4 wheel discs, bring the car quickly to a halt without fade or swerve.

This car comes with the original factory window sticker, with a Mercedes owners manual, a service manual, and with a 1983 showroom color brochure of that year’s models offered by Mercedes.

It is rare to find such a well-preserved example of this classic sedan, but to find one with low mileage, great cosmetics, excellent mechanics and no rust is almost impossible. This car has all the luxury and quality that you expect from Mercedes, while slowly sipping diesel fuel like a modern economy car. This 240 D truly is in a class by itself.
