Description:
The Mercedes-Benz 300CD diesel is an icon in the classic luxury car marketplace
—a full size, five passenger coupe offering a host of amenities packaged into a sturdy, safe vehicle that was a true economy car before that concept was popularized. Normally these cars only become available with high mileage because their owners are reluctant to give up the safety, reliability and economy these diesels are famous for providing. Our 1980 has traveled only 108,000 miles, and runs and looks like a much newer car.Finished in the sporty Mercedes red with a contrasting beige interior, this car stands out from its peers as a true classic. The paint is in good condition, with only a few stone and door edge chips. There is a small dent in front of the left rear wheel well that is difficult to see from most angles. The chrome is nice, shining brightly as if new. The interior is clean, without any rips, tears or seam separations other than an abrasion on the driver’s seat bolster and two small punctures on the other seats. The headliner is very nice, including the area surrounding the sunroof. The glass is all chip and crack free, although there is some delamination of the rear window and a wiper abrasion on the windshield. The trunk is as clean as the car’s interior, a fitting area for transporting your fine luggage, prized golf clubs, or vintage wines!
Mechanically, the car is equipped with Mercedes’ bullet-proof 5 cylinder diesel engine that is reported to routinely deliver 30 mpg. The engine starts right up, even in cold weather, and will run at highway speeds all day without a whimper. The automatic transmission shifts properly, although periodically it makes a hard shift into second. Due to the torque of the engine, it easily attains highway speeds.
As one would expect from Mercedes, the car has all of the most desired conveniences. The power sunroof operates perfectly and, unlike newer cars, is positioned so the driver and front seat passenger are directly under a large patch of sky, should they wish, without being buffeted by the passing air. The car is air conditioned and the system blows cold air. The four windows are all power and work properly, as does the vacuum door lock system. All of the instruments, including the clock, work properly. The car has cruise control and that is in need of service. The AM/FM radio works well, as does the power antenna. Of course, all of the lights and safety equipment work properly.
The tires are good and the steering is tight and true, resulting in a comfortable, stable ride at highway speeds. One of the reasons these cars are so desirable is that they are highly maneuverable, with a short turning radius and a power steering system that is effortless while at the same time providing good driver feedback. The brakes bring the car quickly to a halt without fade or swerve.
It is rare to find such a well-preserved example of this classic coupe, but to find one with low mileage, good cosmetics, good mechanics and virtually no rust is almost impossible. This car has all the luxury and quality that you expect from Mercedes, while slowly sipping diesel fuel like a modern economy car. This 300 CD truly is in a class by itself.
