The 1970 Camaro Z28 is considered by the Auto Editors of Consumer
Guide to be the “best all-around Z28 ever built”, and it is easy to see
why. The new body style combined with the Corvette LT1 engine helped
define—and refine—the term muscle car.
This particular red Z28 with white racing stripes features a nice
repaint from the original silver and the finish is in very good
condition but for some blemishes on the hood. It is a particularly
attractive color combination and emphasizes that this is a car meant for
speed. The body is in very good condition, with some evidence of
well-done body repair in the right dog-leg. The frame shows some
evidence of rust in front of the rear spring perches and of a rust
inhibitor having been used.
The engine is the solid lifter, hot cam LT1 developing 360 hp from a 350
cubic inch block at 11.0:1 compression. The engine markings stamped on
the block [01L517204 and V0324CTC] suggest that it is the car’s original
engine. At some point the original Holley four-barrel was replaced with
an Edelbrock carburetor. The engine is mated to an automatic
transmission and a 4.10:1 12 bolt rear end.
The interior is black vinyl that is in good condition, with a little
wear showing on the driver’s seat. The instruments all work properly
and the aftermarket oil pressure gauge shows 70 psi when the engine is
at work. The glass is all good with some small scratches on the
driver’s window. All of the lights and safety features of the car
function properly with the exception of the wipers. The radio—an AM/FM
unit—is not working. The headliner is in good condition with no rips or
tears, but some of the stitching is coming undone on the passenger side
(see picture).
The wheels are the original Z28 steel mag-style and feature 255/60R15
Firestone tires on the front and 295/50R15 Firestones on the rear. The
wheels and tires are in like new condition.
As might be expected, this car is best defined by one word:
performance. It is a no-nonsense high performance car that is wrapped
in a beautiful body style that Camaro aficionados will lust after and
everyone else will admire.
