The Bug that Everyone Remembers and Loves
The 1969 Beetle was a very popular vehicle: by one estimate it constituted 5% of new car sales in America during that model year. And yet, today one rarely sees them on the road and almost never in the condition of our Red ’69 Cabriolet.
But being out of sight is not being out of mind, which is why this car attracted so much attention—honks and grins—when we took it out on a test drive here in Fredericksburg. As dependable as the coupes were, the convertibles were all that plus being FUN! Drop the top and let the fun begin.
Full Restoration
This is a car that was redone so nicely that all it needs is a driver. Not a national show car but a good example that would do well at local/regional shows and would be a perfect Saturday evening cruise-in entrant. Everything looks fresh on the car: the paint, the interior and the top; plus, it starts, runs and drives as it should
Nice in Every Way
· Paint and Chrome
The first thing that jumps out is the shiny red finish. It is brilliant and immediately gives you a good feeling that the rest of the car is equally nice. Prior to the car being painted, any rust issues were addressed and there is no evidence of any rust-through. Not a 3” show quality paint job but a nice driver-quality finish.
The chrome is good but not perfect—a slight bit of surface rust on the right side of the rear bumper and some pitting on some of the chrome trim, but overall the chrome is in keeping with and enhances the rest of the exterior.
The convertible top is black and is in very good condition (please see pictures). The manual raising-lowering mechanism works properly and one person can easily drop the top or put it back up.
· Interior
The interior is in very good to excellent condition. The front bucket seats, trimmed with red piping to match the exterior color, look great. The door panels are both in excellent condition, complete with side pockets, and the gray carpeting looks as new. The headliner is clean and seems rip and hole free, but it may not have been a professional installation unlike the top, which was professionally installed.
Again, as one would expect, the dash and instrument panel are all in excellent condition. All of the gauges work, as does all of the safety equipment.
· Mechanical Systems
The 4-cylinder VW engine starts right up and runs smoothly and strongly, easily powering the car either around town or out on the highway.
The transmission shifts smoothly, allowing both up-shifts and down-shifts without any difficulty.
This cabriolet has a tool kit and jack, both of which appear to be period-correct.
To a Car Show or the Grocery Store: this is the car to take!
Simply put, this 1969 VW Cabriolet is a hoot to drive. Apart from the attention it is sure to get, it is just a fun car to drive. Drop the top and scoot off to wherever you wish, there is room for 5 or, fold down the rear seat, and you can put a week’s worth of groceries (or your golf clubs) inside. If you haven’t driven one of these cars in 35 years—or perhaps at all—you are going to fall in love with this red convertible.
