Description:
The Cougar was Mercury’s “pony car” and propelled it into the muscle car arena with the tagline: the sign of the cat. 1969 saw the introduction of the first Cougar convertible, and it was an instant hit for both its styling and its exclusivity (only 5,796 base Cougar convertibles were built). Our ’69 convertible is an extremely nice example of the 351-2v/4-speed-equipped Cougars.
This 1969 Cougar convertible stands out from the crowd with its glimmering burnt orange finish with white racing stripes. The paint is nicely accented by a white, near-new convertible top and a white boot cover—both of which are in very good condition. The interior is tastefully finished in white with matching orange accents on the seating surfaces and the door panels have a cougar insert. This is a nicely done car that will stand out from other Cougars you might encounter.
This car has the Windsor 351-2v engine that starts right up and does everything correctly. The transmission is a four speed that shifts smoothly through all gears. We liked the car because it isn’t one you have to work at to enjoy. The power front disk brakes and power steering add to the enjoyment of driving this car. It drives smoothly but has plenty of power when you need it, and sounds great with the large diameter exhaust and flow through mufflers.
The convertible power top mechanism works properly, enabling one to go easily from top-down to top-up should a sudden rain shower come along. All of the glass is in good condition, and all of the windows work smoothly. The instruments and safety features all work nicely [I’ll confirm], with the exception of the horn. The car also has 205-70R14 B.F. Goodrich tires that have most of their tread life remaining.
This is a reasonably priced Cougar that offers the advantages of being distinctive, sporty and yet well-mannered. It is a car that will feel at home on the road or at the show, and do well at both.
