Description:
In 1966 Pontiac offered an array of muscle cars, but the 2+2 convertible with the big 421 cid engine is the rarest of all. While the GTO was Pontiac’s Pony Car, the Catalina 2+2 was its bigger brother muscle car. Rarely does one see a tri-carb/4-speed 2+2 convertible, but one almost never sees one in the condition or with the credentials of this car (copy of window sticker, PHS documentation, Dealer Copy of the car shipping record and 30 years of receipts)Please see photos of the VIN plate and Cowl Tag.
This 2+2 convertible has been resprayed to its original Barrier Blue with a finish that far exceeds the quality available from the factory in 1966. The chrome and glass are all in very nice condition as well. The white convertible top is in excellent condition and features a glass rear window that looks as new. The car has a power top that is covered, when in the lowered position, by a white factory-correct boot. Our car features the famous Pontiac 8-lug aluminum wheels. The car also has fender skirts that appear to be in excellent condition that the owner prefers not to use (he likes the look of the car without them).
The Parchment vinyl interior is factory-correct as well, and is in excellent condition. It features bucket seats complete with a console that houses the Hurst shifter. The dash is in very good condition and all of the gauges and the tachometer work properly. The factory air conditioner was a dealer-installed option that has subsequently been converted to R-134 and blows ice cold. Likewise, all of the power windows go up and down properly. The Pontiac AM/FM radio works as well.
Of course, what turned a wonderfully styled family car into a true muscle car was the drivetrain. Our 2+2 was ordered with its non-HO 421 cubic inch V-8 fed by three-twos to develop 356 horsepower. This is the car’s original engine and was rebuilt in the mid ‘90’s. The engine starts immediately and pulls properly through its entire power band. The Hurst shifter was a factory option but the original 3-speed transmission has been upgraded to a user-friendly 4-speed. The transmission shifts effortlessly both up and down through the gears and makes this muscle car a true pleasure to drive—fast or slow! The power gets fed to the rear wheels through Pontiac’s Saf-T-Track limited slip differential. The car stops straight and true and the power steering makes handling it effortless.
This is truly a get-in and drive-away car: everything works properly—lights, safety equipment, gauges, radio, windows, top, etc. and mechanically the car is in very nice condition. The 2 inches of records and receipts document the care the car has had over the years.
If you have been looking at GTOs, this car will surprise you. If you know the 2+2s, this car will delight you. There are no disappointments here; just a rare example of a well-kept muscle car with all the features that one could wish for:
• Plenty of power from a high performance engine and 4-speed transmission;
• A high-quality paint job combined with a very nice interior—all back to original specs;
• A comfortable car to drive with power accessories and a great air conditioner; and
• A rare car that is ready to show or go.
This is a unique car that gets attention from the novices and pros alike. Whether at a car show, a cruise-in or a rally, you will arrive in style (and comfort) and spend the rest of your time handling the compliments.
