Description:
Many collectors think the 1963 Impala SS represented the “high water mark” of the early-60’s Chevrolet coupes. With important stylistic changes from the earlier models, the ’63 model year introduced restyled fenders, a new aluminum tail light panel (machine turned on the SS), and a creased “convertible look” roofline. All in all, the new sport coupe was an immediate hit and was destined to become a classic.
Our 1963 is an original (see cowl tag picture for decoding) Super Sport coupe that came from the factory finished in Ember Red with a matching red vinyl interior. The respray is in very good condition and has a deep gleam that is achieved only with a correctly-applied finish. The chrome is very good to excellent as is the glass. The red interior—equipped with bucket front seats and center console--is generally very nice although the driver’s seat needs to be recovered over new foam. The red-red interior/exterior combination works well in this car.
Inside a well-detailed engine compartment is a V-8 that the owner believes to be a 327. [We are unable to corroborate this since the cowl tag only identifies the car as being built with a V-8 and we cannot determine if this is the original engine.] Regardless, this fast and powerful V-8 provides an instant response in all ranges of the performance curve. To better utilize the torque of the engine, thereby enhancing the car’s performance, this car was retrofitted with a Turbo 350 3-speed transmission, replacing the more problematic Powerglide. The result is a car that is quick off the line and ready to downshift when extra acceleration is sought.
The power steering and power brakes make this coupe a pleasure to drive. This car is equipped with chrome Cragers and Dunlop GT Qualifier P225/70R14s that look almost new. Also included with the car are four stock wheels complete with their SS hubcaps and mounted with 215/75-14 B.F. Goodrich tires (see photos).
The underside of the car has been undercoated and it appears that new rocker panels have been installed, although the original front floor braces were not changed. We are unable to tell whether the floor pans were replaced, but they seem to be sound. There is no evidence of any rust or bubbles on the exterior of the car.
This is a car that is ready to go; it starts right up and runs well. The horn and wipers function properly as do the lights, with the exception of the backup and license plate lights. The turn signals work, but the canceling mechanism will need attention. Additionally, the car has been retrofitted with seat belts front and back.
Our 1963 Impala is a fine example of a car that was popular when it was introduced and has only gained in popularity ever since. Finding a nice one, however, can be difficult and finding one that is reasonably priced is rare. You will be pleasantly surprised by both the condition and the reasonable price of this red Super Sport. Come by and take a look at this factory SS.
