Description:
The ’60 through ’64 Ford Galaxie line was a popular model during that era. The XLs are highly regarded by collectors and the convertibles are the most sought after of all. Our low-mileage (85,460 actual), restored 1963 XL convertible is a nice example of what these cars should be: good cosmetics, good mechanicals, and available at good price!
The car was refinished in the original factory Chestnut Brown Metallic, and other than a couple of chips, the finish is quite nice. It has a good shine and the color adds a note of distinction that the white and black finished cars often lack. There are fender skirts (see pictures) that go with the car but that the owner has chosen not to install. The car has a new Ivory convertible top that was installed early in May by one of the area’s best auto upholsterers, and provides a great contrast to the exterior paint. The top raising and lowering mechanism works properly—and, in the event of a sudden rainstorm—quickly.
The matching Medium Chestnut interior is in excellent condition without splits, holes or evidence of wear. There is a slight crack in the dash pad (see picture) immediately to the right of the instrument pod. Of course, this XL has bucket seats and a center console, so with the top down it has a distinctly sporty feel while still retaining the roominess of a car designed to seat five adults. The convertible top bootcover is likewise in excellent condition and matches the upholstery.
Our ’63 Galaxie has the optional fuel-efficient 352 cid V-8, nestled into a clean engine compartment, that has plenty of power to make this car a joy to drive. It also has the desirable three-speed Cruise-O-Matic automatic transmission with a console-mounted shift lever. The engine starts right up and runs from an idle to higher RPMs without any hesitation. The transmission shifts as smoothly as it did when new. The dual exhaust gives off a throaty growl without being loud or distracting from one’s top-down driving pleasure.
This car has an almost new set of Firestone whitewall radials (215/75 R 14), making it ready to drive away on a trip across town or across the state. All of the safety equipment works (lights, turn signals, wipers, horn, defroster/heater fan) and has a full set of seatbelts for 4. This car has the original radio (needing repair) and a clock that works and appears to keep good time!
Finally, this is a car that you can take on that long-weekend trip, with plenty of room in the trunk for luggage and your golf bags or picnic basket.
All in all, this is a great car for the top-down driving season and, with the addition of its brand new convertible top, you can extend that season well into the colder months. These convertibles are hard to find, but nearly impossible to locate in the mechanical and cosmetic condition that this one offers. Whether at regional car show, dinner at a special restaurant or a day at the golf course, you can be assured that this car will be noticed and admired by everyone who sees it.
