The Last Year of an Outstanding Model
The 62’s were the last of MGs very successful “A” series, containing all of the upgrades and enhancements as that car evolved over the previous 6 years. These cars were immediately popular because they had the attributes that the market sought: sporty, quick, inexpensive and FUN. The coupes constituted only a small portion of the many MGs produced, with only a reported 26 coupes being built in 1962 for the North American market.
Restored with Attention to Quality
From its paint to its wheels, this MGA exhibits good quality work that makes it a nice driver-level example of these rare coupes.
Nice Cosmetics
·
Paint and ChromeJust professionally detailed, the paint—a nice respray in Chariot Red—glistens like it was painted yesterday. There are areas around the edge of the hood (bonnet) and passenger door that could do with a bit of touch-up paint where slight chipping has occurred from their opening and closing.
The chrome is very good to excellent and nicely accentuates the red exterior.
The underside of the car appears to have the normal amount of just surface rust, and a new set of wooden floorboards were recently installed while the clutch work was being done.
·
InteriorThe interior red vinyl upholstery is in very nice condition and appears to have been totally restored. The seats are comfortable suggesting that they may have had new foam installed when they were redone; and door panels are clean without holes, separations or unusual wear. The black carpeting appears to have been replaced recently and the black headliner is in excellent condition.
The dash pad is likewise in good condition—neither faded nor cracked.
Mechanically Sound
Our MGA coupe has undergone extensive mechanical restoration to make it dependable and fun to drive. In the course of that restoration, directed by a very particular owner, the following work was done and upgrades made in the last 1,700 miles:
·
The brake system was totally rebuilt;·
The clutch assembly, slave cylinder and ring gear were replaced;·
The ignition system was redone, together with a new generator and voltage regulator;·
New front shocks;·
The cooling system was flushed and new hoses, water pump and thermostat installed·
New motor mounts and U-joints were installed;·
The SU carburetors were rebuilt; and·
A new water temp/oil pressure gauge was installed. The car’s 1622 cc engine starts right up and runs properly whether idling in city traffic or cruising down the highway. Likewise the transmission shifts properly.
The car has a set of 6:00 x 15 bias tires that look like they have most of their tread remaining, but should be replaced because there is evidence of sidewall cracking. The 5 knock-off wire wheels add a sporty look to this coupe.
As noted, the brakes have been rebuilt and a new master cylinder installed. The combination of front disc and rear drum brakes quickly bring this sports car to a halt from speed.
The odometer reads 85,352 and the Virginia title shows the mileage as “actual”, but on a 49 year old car we are unable to verify its accuracy.
And, it’s Ready to Go
This isn’t a car that you need to fix before you can enjoy it. Almost everything already works—lights, wipers, signals, horn. The dash lights, however, appear to need attention. In addition, there has been a new AM/FM/CD stereo installed.
A Classic—and rare--MGA!
Whether at a cruise-in, a car show or stopped at a light, everyone will admire this great-looking coupe. These MGAs typify the style of English car that made sports cars popular in this country. And, as a coupe, you have 12-month “Sunday” driving at your fingertips.
