1960 Triumph TR3A

Year:  1960
Make:  Triumph
Model:  TR3A
Price:  $12,500

Description:

The Triumph TR3A helped define “sports car” for a whole generation of drivers. This 1960 red low-slung, hair-in-the-wind hard charger puts a smile on your face whether you are just looking at it in your garage or if you have your foot to the floor going down some country road. The German and Italian cars are great, but this TR3 is fun.

Our TR3 was painted red from its original blue about ten years ago, and while in good condition there are a few cracks and chips that keep it from being excellent. The engine compartment also received a repaint but the finish was brushed on and not sprayed. The chrome is very nice, and the luggage carrier on the rear deck will carry your picnic basket. There is no evident rust or rust repair and the body appears straight and correct.

The black vinyl interior is in average condition but worn. However, recovering the seats and replacing the carpet would give the car a fresh look. The tonneau and top frame boot cover are in very good condition and the top looks to have had little use. There are no side curtains included with the car. However the optional wind wings are a nice touch.

The car runs and drives well. The engine is really strong, and the four-speed transmission has electric overdrive. The synchromesh on the top 3 gears works properly allowing easy up and down shifts. The 165 SR 15 Michelin XZX tires are in very good condition, providing excellent road holding characteristics. The steering is typical worm and roller being somewhat loose as they all are. A factory shop manual is included with the car.

All of the gauges and safety equipment work correctly with the exception of the horn. The heater and controls were removed at some point in the past when the heater core started leaking, and the car will be sold with a replacement core that the owner had pressure tested several years ago but never got around to installing.

As much as this TR is a delight to look at, the real fun starts when you turn the ignition key. This is a car that is noticed wherever it goes and is a model that is increasingly hard to find. If you’ve wanted a TR3, you won’t go wrong with this Triumph: a nice driving car at the right price.
