1956 Thunderbird Gold Medallion
Of the three-year series of the original two-seat Thunderbirds, many enthusiasts consider the 1956 model year as the best of the group: more refined than the ’55 and less altered than the ’57, and fewer made than in the other two years. The 1956 typifies Ford’s promotion of the 2-seat Thunderbird as a “personal sports car”. Our fully-restored ’56 is a great example of a great car that was awarded the coveted CTCI Senior Gold Medallion.
This Thunderbird has had the benefit of a frame-off restoration including a high-quality respray in the original Fiesta Red, with a contrasting black convertible top. The paint, as the Gold Medallion status would indicate, is shiny and virtually free from any chips or nicks. The convertible top (there is no hardtop) is like new with only a few scuffs on the rear window from being periodically lowered into the boot.
In 1956 Ford moved the spare tire into a continental kit, thereby adding storage room to the trunk as well as enhancing the looks of the car. Also included in 1956 were much-appreciated side vents and the routing of the exhaust pipes through each side of the rear bumper. Completing the exterior trim are fender skirts and wire spoke hubcaps that add a sporty note to the car.
The interior is finished in the original Fiesta Red and white combination. The upholstery and carpeting is in excellent condition as is the rest of the interior. For those who wish to do their own decoding, we have included a photo of the car’s data plate.
Open the hood and you are looking into a detailed engine bay that is almost as clean as when the car left the showroom floor. Similarly, the underside of the car is extremely clean even though the car is driven to local car shows—but only in the nicest of weather. When not at a show, the car is kept in a luxurious garage filled with memorabilia dedicated to the Thunderbird marque.
This is a properly optioned Thunderbird, including the 312 cid engine, automatic transmission, power steering, power brakes, power windows and a 4-way power seat. The car starts right up, shifts properly, and steers, stops and goes as it should. This is a high-quality vehicle equipped with all the options that make a car like this a pleasure to own and to drive.
This car is not only of show quality but is also a reliable driver. All of the instruments and safety equipment function as they did when new with the exception of the heater fan and back-up lights. Both the radio and the clock are working. The 6.70 x 15 Goodyear bias ply white wall tires are in excellent condition and speak to the effort to maintain the originality of the car. The mileage on the odometer is 47,390 which the Virginia title lists as “actual”.
This Thunderbird comes in a distinctive and popular color combination that features all of the options one could want. Whether at a national or regional car show, dinner at a special restaurant or a day at the golf course, you can be assured that this car will be noticed and admired by everyone who sees it.
