1956 Jaguar XK140 Restoration
This 1956 Jaguar XK140 drophead coupe (as distinguished from the roadster also produced in 1956) has recently come in for restoration. The dropheads were mechanically the same as the roadsters but featured a more elegant interior and a somewhat different profile.
Our customer has owned this left-hand steering drophead for almost 20 years, and 15 years ago decided to embark on the restoration of this fine motorcar. He disassembled the car and packed those parts into boxes (see picture) and then sent the body and frame to be cleaned and painted (frame off). The car was returned to him twelve years ago, but the project got put on hold due to other commitments.
This summer, the owner and his wife approached us to complete the restoration of the Jaguar to its original elegance. The car was delivered in late August, 2008, along with many boxes of parts (at this writing, we are awaiting the arrival of the engine and transmission). As might be expected of a 52 year old car, some of those parts will be usable and some will not; however all undoubtedly will require refurbishing.
The rear left fender was damaged at some point during its storage in
the owner’s garage, and we have just completed the repair and repainting
of the damaged section. As we continue with the restoration, we shall be
posting periodic pictures and comments on our website so others who
loved these wonderful Jaguar dropheads can watch our progress.
