1955 Thunderbird, Authenticity Award

Year:  1955
Make:  Ford
Model:  Thunderbird
Price:  $49,900

The Start of an Era

The 1955 Thunderbird was Ford’s entry into the two-passenger sports car arena.  While in part it was a response to the Corvette, the T-bird (as it quickly became known) was designed to be a comfortable driving vehicle rather than a competition car.  Our ’55 is restored to a level that makes it a tribute to the vision encompassed in that first year’s model.

Restored as New

This T-bird is a 52,000 original mileage car that was professionally restored by Restorations Unlimited, Portland, Oregon in 2000 to its original configuration: paint color, interior, drivetrain (see VIN/Cowl tag) from the ground up (and, yes, frame off).  Since that restoration it has traveled less than 500 miles and has NO road grime.  A Q-tip and a Saturday afternoon is all that stands between this car and a concours judged event.  This is such a careful restoration that the chassis chalk markings, the tape used (by the factory) during the trip down the production line, and the fabric pads between the rear spring leafs have all been flawlessly replicated.  It simply doesn’t get any better than this.

And to CTCI Standards

Our Thunderbird was so meticulously restored that it was awarded both

·        CTCI’s Authenticity Award; and

·        CTCI’s Senior Gold Medallion.

Quadruple Black

This show-quality car has been re-finished in its original Ravens Black—both the body and the hardtop.

In addition to the black body and hardtop, the soft top is black and the interior is black and white.

Black is a color that shows a car’s every flaw.  But there are no flaws to see on this Thunderbird!

Both Tops

Our T-bird has both the soft convertible top as well as the hardtop, both of which, as you would suspect, are in perfect condition.  It is, therefore, a 4-season vehicle, should you be so inclined.

Mechanically Flawless

This Thunderbird has its correctly date-coded, but rebuilt, 292 cid/190 hp 4 bbl V-8 that resides in a fully-detailed engine compartment.  If you looked in the engine bay back in 1955, it wouldn’t have looked any different than it does today.  The engine starts and runs exactly as it should.

The transmission is the original factory 3-speed with overdrive that shifts easily through the gears on both up-shifts as well as down-shifts. A manual transmission in these first-year Baby Birds added an important component to their sporty appeal and value today.

Safety Equipment, etc.

All of the safety equipment on the car works (lights, signals, horn, wipers—albeit slowly), as do the gauges.  The AM radio—which appears to be original—will need some attention.  The doors will require some adjustment to close properly.  This car has the correct tires, wheels and hubcaps, and is equipped with fender skirts.

The trunk has the correct liner, spare and jack—all as perfect as when it left the factory.

Back to the 50’s

There is perhaps no other car that is more representative of the 50’s and the start of the automobile revolution than the 1955 Thunderbird.  During the three years of these “baby birds”, there is none more influential than the ’55 T-bird.

It is rare to find any automobile restored to this level of quality and authenticity, and never at this price.  This car is ready to go directly from our showroom to the most rigorous of the Thunderbird concours judging events tomorrow rather than in 2 years after the expenditure of $125,000.  Or, it can be re-dedicated to its original purpose:  an absolutely wondrous driving experience.
