1928 Chevrolet Stakebed 1 1/2 ton Truck

Year:  1928
Make:  Chevrolet
Model:  Capitol Stakebed
Price:  $17,500

Description:

Our 1928 Chevrolet Capitol stakebed is a great example of the early work trucks of the 20th Century.  This stakebed is a well-kept vehicle that symbolizes American commerce of 80 years ago but is truly timeless because it has an eye-catching appeal to collectors and spectators alike.  This truck would make a perfect advertising vehicle for someone who wanted to call attention to their business or their location.

This truck has a green over black paint scheme that was applied during an earlier restoration but which remains in generally good condition.  The body is free from dents and rust other than some minor surface corrosion where the paint has worn off the running boards and a few similar spots around the engine cowl where the paint has been chipped as the cowl was opened or closed.

The interior is finished in black vinyl that is consistent with the work purpose of this truck.  The upholstery on the seat is good condition without any rips or tears.  The headliner is all wood and in good condition as well.  All in all, cosmetically the interior of the truck is quite nice.

The bed of the truck is wooden and all of the wood is in good condition and has recently been refinished.  The stake sides have just been refinished inside and out in high gloss, with all of the hardware cleaned and painted.  All in all, the “business end” of this truck is in excellent condition and gleams with the new finish.

This ’28 Chevy truck has wooden spoke wheels which were also just redone.  The fresh paint makes the wheels a visual focal point for the vehicle.  The tires are Firestone 6.00-20s and have virtually all of their tread remaining.  An additional enhancement, mounted on the bed just behind the passenger door, is nesting of 3 kerosene emergency flares that appear to have been original equipment on this stakebed.

The stakebed’s 4-cylinder engine starts right up, idles nicely and runs and drives properly, showing 26,538 miles on the odometer.  The 3-speed standard transmission functions correctly, as do the brakes and steering.  The lights work, the horn does not, and the truck had neither turn signals nor windshield wiper(s)!   One drive in this great old truck and you are transported—literally and figuratively—back 80 years earlier when vehicles like this stakebed were the commerce vehicles of the country, traveling over dirt roads and cobblestone streets alike.

Whether used as an entry in a periodic parade or car show, or as an attention-getter for advertising a business, this 1928 Chevrolet Capitol stakebed is an ideal vehicle.  You can be assured that seeing another one like it is unlikely and the chances of finding another in this condition are even more remote, which is, after all, the appeal of this truck.
